Looking forward to autumn colors as I enjoy the last bit of summer green along the Little Calumet River Trail – Indiana Dunes National Park.

Sunrise on the Prairie

Sunrise breaking through the morning fog on Mnoke Prairie – Indiana Dunes National Park.

This is a marvelous trail for an easy stroll and bird watching.

The Mnoke Prairie trail combines with the Little Calumet River Trail. The short version of the hike starts at the Bailly Homestead and goes along the Little Calumet River for about a mile before coming to a fork on the path. A sign to the left marks the start of the Mnoke Prairie. The looped trail from this point is slightly less than one mile long.

A Walk to Chellberg Farm

A Walk to Chellberg Farm

A visit to Chellberg Farm starts on a tree lined trail. If you just keep walking about one half mile you’ll catch a glimpse of the farmhouse. Get off the main trail a little bit and take a right to get a lovely view of the prairie, some cows, pigs and the garden. Early mornings are often filled with sunshine breaking through the fog. On this day, I happened to run into Mr. and Mrs Chellberg, all dressed in their gardening clothes as the watched over their lovely flowers, fruits, and veggies of all varieties.

Chellberg Farm is on one of several trails that are part of the Indiana Dunes National Park.

The World is a Canvas

The world is a canvas for photographers even when that backdrop may be close to your own backyard. For me, that canvas is often the Indiana Dunes National Park. The image above was captured on one of my mornings at the Indiana Dunes National Park. This is Lakeview Beach on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Foggy days are ideal for watching the sunrise at Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve. If you enjoy mornings of quiet peacefulness and beauty, this is the perfect place to start your day.

Light and Shadows

Light and Shadows

My favorite spot on the Pinhook Trail of the Indiana Dunes National Park is standing on the bridge, looking across this scene. This is right about halfway into the loop trail and the spot that I still look forward to getting to. As many times as I’ve been here, the setting is the same but the backdrop changes continuosly depending on the light. Sometimes there are birds in the water and other times not. Reflections too are there on sunny days but not so much on gray days. Beauty is one thing that is consistent. Fall, winter, spring, or summer, beauty can be found along the trails.

Indiana Dunes National Park in B&W

Landscapes from the Indiana Dunes National Park – four different trails. First, along Dunbar Beach sits one of five homes from the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago exhibit of the Century of Progress Historic District. Next, a place to rest on the Chellberg Farm. Below that, the perfect place to enjoy a sunrise is from the top of the Dune Ridge trail. Morning reflections stand out along the the Great Marsh trail. Last one is another part on the Chellberg Farm trail exposes the light and shadows of morning light.

Outdoors on Center Stage

Great Outdoors on Center Stage

Five scenes from one morning on one trail on the Indiana Dunes National Park. Enjoyed the quietness of Central Beach earlier this week before moving on to the sandy trails through the greenness of the forest. After a couple of days of rainfall, the wildflowers were taking in the sunshine and so was I.

Winter in the Shade

Kemil Beach – Indiana Dunes National Park – 3.6.21

“It was one of those March days
when the sun shines hot
and the wind blows cold,
when it is summer in the light
and winter in the shade.”

– Charles Dickens
